Academic Progression in Nursing (APIN) collaborates with state Action Coalitions and their partners to accelerate implementation of promising practices that will help states achieve our goals of seamless academic progression and increasing the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent of the nursing workforce by 2020. Developing innovative strategies with community colleges, universities and practice partners will ensure that the nursing workforce is prepared to deliver high quality patient care across all practice settings. APIN is a grant initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in partnership with the Tri-Council for Nursing and administered the AONE.
Advancing Academic Progression in Nursing Education
APIN funds nine states doing innovative work to advance seamless academic progress to baccalaureate degrees and beyond. These nine states, including California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Washington State, are leading the country by implementing new education pathways to meet the demand for baccalaureate prepared nurses, as recommended by an Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. AONE CEO Pamela A. Thompson, MS, RN, CENP, FAAN , serves as the Director of the APIN National Program Office.
The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action
In order to help further advance implementation of the IOM report’s recommendations, RWJF is also supporting The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, a collaborative effort with AARP and the AARP Foundation. The Campaign for Action is a coordinated national campaign that provides a blueprint for transforming the nursing profession to improve the quality of health care and the way it is delivered. APIN collaborates closely with the Campaign.
